Can I Wear Regular Soft Contact Lenses with Astigmatism?

Prescription contact lenses are meant to correct vision problems (myopia & hyperopia) but they are not capable of correcting axis problems. Astigmatism is a refractive index error where eyes fail to focus the light rays at one point on retina. Astigmatism is caused by an irregular shape of cornea; this is why patients with astigmatism suffer from blurred/hazy vision. Soft regular contact lenses keep rotating on the eyes that may overly stress astigmatic patients’ nerves & ocular muscles. Leaving astigmatism untreated, even the mild astigmatism, causes squint eyes, tension in nerves, head-aches & fatigue.

Soft Toric contact lenses help patients to see clearly. These lenses are available in varying strengths from nearsightedness to shortsightedness. Unlike regular soft lenses, toric contact lenses deal with two kinds of refraction problems. Also, they do not rotate like regular contacts because of the different powers. Toric contact lenses are thicker than normal soft contact lenses. They are made heavier at the bottom which let them auto-adjust to the meridians where the vision correction is required.

How to Diagnose Astigmatism

Astigmatism is fairly common condition than you may think. In United States a wide population suffers from astigmatism to some degree. Mild astigmatism does not obstruct vision but larger degree of astigmatism may cause headaches, blurred vision & needs to be treated. Astigmatism is basically genetic but it may occur in later years of life due to accidents etc.

Please note, if you abruptly start having blurred vision, most probably the reason is either stress, workload or seasonal bacterial attack. If you suspect yourself for suffering from astigmatism; you may take a test at home before meeting your eye doctor for more advanced diagnosis & treatment.
Wearing your prescription contacts; if you see these lines all equally distant, sharp & clear from at the distance of 14”; you are safe. You may be suffering from some degree of Astigmatism if some of the sets of lines are sharp whilst others are obscure. On the basis of this test; you can now make a firm decision about meeting your eye care practitioner.
