How to De-frizz a Synthetic Wig: Detangle & Defrizz

Synthetic wigs are prone to frizz and tangles. Though a synthetic wig can be treated for disheveled fibers, using a homemade wig conditioner; frizz can be sometimes awkwardly permanent. Synthetic wigs come with a pre-set style so it is presumed that you need not to worry about the style as they will revert back to the factory-built style, shape & bounce. It is unfortunately a misunderstanding about synthetic wig. Ill-treating your wigs will always cost you harshly. Frequent washing, brushing & usage of styling products may turn synthetic wigs frizzy.

Two Simple Steps to De-frizz a 100% Synthetic Wig
Regular synthetic wigs are difficult to style. You cannot use your hot curler or iron to style them. Therefore always invest in 100% heat-resistant synthetic wigs only. If your wig is frizzy and disheveled; consider taking out the tangles first. Try to open the knots or ease the entire process by soaking your wig in a fabric softener conditioner. After you are done treating your synthetic wig for tangles, brace yourself for the next big project that will either ruin your wig or make it. Thus, you need to be careful.

De-Frizzing a 100% Heat Resistant Synthetic Wig

This method is done by using boiled water. If done properly; you can get your wigs look as new as they were at the time of purchase. Hang your wig on a mannequin head and place it at a good height. Let the wig fibers dangle. Make sections of your wig and flick them out. Pour boiling water slowly over each section & let it hang. The weight of the water will pull down the wig fibers that will straighten the wig reducing the frizz. Let it air dry. Straighten them using a straightener if you wish to achieve a dead sleek look.

Wigs develop frizz where they rub on your collar, nape and shoulder. Also failing to prevent them from static-cling damages your synthetic wigs. Store them braided in original packaging or if you prefer to hang them on a wig hanger, keep them wrapped in a cotton scarf. Following these tips can significantly increase the life of your synthetic wig. How do you manage your frizzy wigs?

How to Style a Short & Curly Synthetic Wig

Much has already been written about styling long wigs. In despair about our tangled long wigs we forget the beauty short & curly wigs can ensure for us. Styling begins with brushing your wig gently;-be it a long or a short. Brushing wakes-up the wig fibers that might have flattened over the period of the time.

Boost Volume
Short synthetic wigs especially with tight curls need volume to appeal. Brush it using short uplifting strokes to create an illusion of thickness. For wigs with ringlet curls, use sophisticated finger strokes to maintain the rings or a pic comb.

Create a Pompadour
Synthetic wigs that are short & curly fascinate when are styled upwards with a noticeable height. To create a pompadour; style it backwards and then dress the fibers in the desired direction. This will eventually adorn your short wig with a chic street-style.

Setting your Style
Only use synthetic wig spray and that too with moderation. Too much of the synthetic wig spray would leave product build-up decreasing the life of your wig. For a softer & natural setting keep the spray at the distance of 6inches from your wig and direct it towards the roots whilst stroking the fibers from the other hand. This will keep the roots firm at the style whereas the ends will have more liberty to roam for a breezy style.

If you want your wig to stay in the same style throughout the day you created; you can switch to the conventional mode of hair-spraying. Keep the spray can at the distance of 12 inches and spray all over. Don’t comb your wig when it is wet.

Revitalize your Style

If you are satisfied with the style of your wig; you only need to revitalize it. Spritz it lightly using a wig conditioner or stroke the fibers softly using fingers. You are all set to flutter with your sassy & swishy curls!

Can I Swim Wearing Synthetic Wig without damaging it?

Generally speaking, swimming with your synthetic wig on is not a good idea. There are different types of synthetic wigs available that withstand to the environments differently (depending on the fiber used) Swimming in the sea or pool water affect the texture and color of the synthetic wigs adversely. To find out if your synthetic wig is compatible with chlorine or salt water, read below:
  1. Synthetic wigs that are safe to swim with, are constructed differently and they are usually made of human hair. Synthetic wigs when are exposed to salt or chlorine water; develop frizz & lose shine. Chlorine may react to discolor your wig and even the texture changes from soft to brittle.
  2. It is also advised that synthetic wigs must not be left unattended when wet. Any abnormal pressure, wringing & trapping of fibers whilst you swim wearing synthetic wig can make the wig lining lose. Due to this, your wig begins to thin.
  3. If the temperature is unbelievably hot outside, synthetic wig is at greater risk of being damaged. Blazing UV rays will do their damage whereas chlorine water of the pool further destroys the fiber.
  4. For underwater cosplay photography, you can have a brief safe dip. However, swimming is not suggested since the water waves may exert pressure.

After being done with your marine photoshoot, let your synthetic wig air-dried naturally. The wig should either be hanged on a Styrofoam head or any other hanger that allows enough of the air to pass through the fibers. Air-drying synthetic wigs will help reverting to the factory-built style and bounce.

Some inexpensive synthetic wigs can be purchased if taking a swim in the pool is inevitable. Or, you can wear a wig scarf for protection against the damage caused by chlorine, salt or UV rays.

4 Ways of Reducing Friction in Synthetic Wigs

Synthetic wigs are made of synthetic fibers. The synthetic fibers get statically charged due to friction. As a result synthetic wigs tangle easily & become rough. Please do not panic, static charge is not a fault but a natural occurrence that cannot be completely avoided. To help reduce the friction, please ensure the following.
  1. Synthetic wigs must not come in contact with synthetic clothing. If you are wearing an acrylic shirt/hoodie; avoid wearing long synthetic wigs.
  2. Store your wigs on mannequin heads or hang them on a wig hanger. Wig fibers when rubbed get frizzy.
  3. Use wig conditioner/ oil sheen spray on the areas where fibers are prone to friction. For instance; underneath the back and over the neck.
  4. Allow your synthetic wigs dry naturally i.e. Air dry. Do not wring or hang your wigs when wet. Use a wig conditioner prior to brushing it to reduce friction.

Natural head movements allow fiber friction because it lets fibers of a wig rub together or rub against other material worn. This cannot be completely avoided. The environment in which a wig is used, stored & styled affects the condition of a wig. Tangles are more common in long wigs as the fibers are vulnerable to rough friction. In order to prevent your wigs from friction, keep your wigs soft using this DIY synthetic wig detangler.

Why should you Avoid Regular Gel when Styling Synthetic Wig?

Synthetic wigs and human hair wigs bear totally different structure. This is therefore evident that products that are formulated for human hair might leave your synthetic wigs damaged. Synthetic hair wigs last you long when they are washed, conditioned and styled using the products that are compatible with. A regular hair gel is suspected to weigh your synthetic wig down because it leaves product residue.

Furthermore, synthetic wig incorporates plastic filament that is heavier than the human hair fiber. Regular gel might not be able to hold the synthetic fibers. To create spikes out of synthetic wigs, use fiber gel spray or wig adhesive to bond the fibers. Synthetic wigs when are styled using regular styling products will turn sticky and itchy. Instead of bonding the fibers, regular hair sprays & mousses leave product build-up that makes brushing and washing a tedious job.

Synthetic wig gel spray such as Paula Young wig spray is a light weight, water-soluble, aerosol free hair spray that gives your synthetic wig a beautiful hold and style. Since it is water soluble it does not leave gunk and gets washed off easily with water.

Synthetic wigs need minimum care but this does not mean you can handle your wigs brutally. They are prone to get tangled, fade color & get brittle if are not taken proper care of. Always follow the instructions that come with your wig’s packaging & stick to synthetic wigs styling products only!

3 Ways to Rock a Synthetic Wig with a Beanie

Beanie is a knitted loose hat; a necessity in winter but serves more as a style statement. Though wearing beanie in summer proves you a dare-devil, the beauty it adds to one's style cannot be neglected. Alternatively, a floral garland can be used in place of a beanie in summer. Choosing a beanie needs a mature sense of fashion; more if you want to accentuate your synthetic wig using bean hats.

Choosing the Color & Design of a Beanie

Beanie is inclined more towards the juvenile fashion. However, at the same time it depicts sophistication if chosen carefully. When choosing a bean hat to accentuate the bangs or to divert attention to the tousles of your favorite synthetic wig; keep it less adorned & less embellished. A beanie would be able to pop up against the color of your synthetic wig, only if it is a neutral shade. Decent colors such as tan, brown and grey also help making an impact.

Wearing a Beanie to Rock a Synthetic Wig

Women love wearing beanie hats because of the comfort they provide. A beanie does not only keep you warm but also help you stand out from the crowd when paired up with a synthetic wig.

Wearing a Beanie over Synthetic Wig for a Casual Look

In day time wear your beanie loosely. It should sit over your skull very comfortably. The front brim of the beanie should sit just above your eye brows, covering your forehead and ears. Don’t pull it all the way down. Let your tousles bounce at either of your shoulders.

Wearing a Beanie over Synthetic Wig for an Outgoing Casual Look

For an outgoing casual look, rock your synthetic wig wearing a beanie in the “Peter Pan” style. This way, your hat sits loosely over your forehead. It is slightly folded at the back that keeps the hat off your neck. This style is recommended when you are wearing a synthetic wig with hidden bangs or no bangs. It also helps creating an illusion of smaller forehead in case you bear a wide forehead line.

Wearing a Beanie for a Glamorous Style against Synthetic Wig

If you are in fun mood today, spruce up a dip dyed synthetic wig with a black/white beanie. Wear your beanie a bit more loosely, further up on your head. Side sweeps your bangs and let them stay out. Tease your tresses or scrunch them for a perfect beach-wave look.

Wearing a Beanie for an Urban Chic Style Statement against Synthetic Wig

To exhibit your love for city fashion, wearing a beanie just at the line of your bangs help. Leave your mane down as it prevents any strange bulges your hair may cause underneath a beanie if wrapped otherwise.

Do you like to wear a beanie? Have you also experienced the meanings it is capable of adding to your synthetic wig?

3 Things to be Re-Checked before going in Public when Wearing Synthetic Wigs

Once in a while every woman has to face with a “Bad Hair Day”. No matter what products you apply and how much time you spend in styling it, your hair wisps would simply say no by going fizzy, dry & lack-lustrous. To rescue, synthetic wigs are considered a great option. Synthetic wigs need minimum care whilst ensuring to enhance the way you already look. However, if these 3 facts are neglected, synthetic wigs can be a pure havoc.

An Ill-Fit Wig

When you put on a wig please be careful about adjusting it on your scalp. An ill-fitting wig is a tremendous turn-off. If your synthetic wig fidgets or you have to keep adjusting it on and off, your wig may end up collecting nothing but embarrassment. Before stepping out, do take note of the ear tabs and the wig net- they should be kept hidden underneath.

Styling a Wig

Synthetic wig often comes with a factory-built style, bounce and shape. If on the other hand you decide to modify the style be very careful. If you sport wig for other than cosplay purposes, you would want to stick to a natural-looking hair style. Straightening a curly wig may add to the length of the wig or it may look matte or even faded (if straightened on high heat settings). Re-check if your synthetic wig looks lack-lustrous after ironing. You would want to use this DIY synthetic wig conditioner to bring back the texture and shine.

Your own Hair

A wig should be a depiction of true hair. If upon putting on a synthetic wig, you notice a lump or hair wisps coming through the wig, you need to re-stylize your hair from scratch. In case you have long and thick hair, it will be hard to ensure a firm base for a synthetic wig. Try pin-curling your hair evenly for a flat base. Sometimes synthetic wig produces foul smell when is not washed frequently. Wash your synthetic wigs every 20 wears to keep them look new

Why does My Synthetic Wig Keep Sliding?

A perfect synthetic wig is adjustable and should fit almost all average heads without being too loose or too tight. Fidgeting of a wig is clear enough to evaluate that the wig is not your size. If it causes headache, your wig probably is too tight. If on the other hand synthetic wig keeps sliding up; there may be two reasons:
  1. The wig is too loose
  2. Your natural hair is unbelievably thick to provide a firm base

  • In case your synthetic wig keeps sliding up, the first thing you should do is to take note of the wig cap’s circumference. If it seems to be okay; it is your thick hair causing a lumpy base that makes your synthetic wig slides up.
  • Try wearing two wig caps instead of just one. Pin curl all hair using bobby pins. Try to keep your pin curls as flat as possible.
  • Secure your pin curls wearing open-end mesh wig liner followed by a regular wig cap. Both the wig liner and wig cap will hold your thick hair firmly.
  • Secure wig caps by using bobby pins. In absence of open-end mesh wig liner; you can back-comb your hair along the hair-line to create a texture. This helps bobby pins hold your hair firmly.
  • Now put your synthetic wig the way you do. Feel the difference!

How do you tackle wig sliding? What tips would you want to add in for a better experience of veteran wig wearers?

How Wigs help you Protect your Hair from Summer Damage

During summer, where we love to boast our bikini bodies we forget nothing but our hair. We would not hesitate to slather sun block over all our bodies, but what we neglect is hair. During summer, hair is twice vulnerable to sun rays than skin because unlike skin that has its own moisture & protein supply to work for, hair is dead- so once moisture is gone- it is gone. Synthetic wigs fortunately can save you from havoc. They provide an absolute personality enhancement and protect your hair from sun damage, salt & chlorine water of the pool & beach.

During sizzling hot season, hair becomes horrifically dehydrated as it loses moisture; locked in the roots. Due to dryness; hair shafts turn frizzy, wispy & unmanageable. Hair become so prone to damage that even minor styling through the use of hair sprays, mousses & hot iron does more gross than good. Streaking & dyeing hair in summer completely drench the moisture out of your tresses, and as a result you see breakage, split ends & lack-lustrous dry hair.

Benefits of Wearing Synthetic Wigs in summer

Synthetic wigs have over-whelming benefits especially in summer.
  1. Synthetic wigs protect your hair under the wig cap & prevent the damage that is bound to happen due to vicious sun rays.
  2. Sun rays rip hair of its natural oils in summer which makes it irreparable. Wearing synthetic wigs with a wig cap beneath keep your natural hair line protected and your hair healthy & shiny.
  3. Synthetic wig also protect your hair from the sand, and humidity your hair might have to battle with at the beach or in the pool.
  4. Synthetic wig also saves you time, money & energy. Simply put a synthetic wig on and get yourself a new stunning look without having to dye your hair with harsh chemicals & elements.
  5. If you have your hair already damaged, a quality synthetic wig can help you hiding your rough locks under a wig. Synthetic wigs also keep your natural hair safe from environmental pollution & traffic smoke.

Experts opine nothing can be done to repair the damaged hair. The best practice is to avoid direct sunlight & none can be your best pal than a good synthetic wig when you are stuck in the blind alley at a scorching sunny day!

Tips to Keep Natural Hair from Breakage underneath a Wig

Wigs are great way to switch to a mod style without getting into any trouble. Synthetic wigs are considered best to achieve a new look every day since they require minimum styling & maintenance. However; if you have been wearing synthetic wigs quite too much lately; you might notice thinning of hair through breakage/rubbing that should be controlled to prevent alopecia (hair loss). Synthetic hair wigs should not bother you usually but being warned is being armed. Furthermore, summer calls for more attention as scalp is oily & hair is prone to damage. Follow the tips given below to prevent natural hair from breakage under a synthetic hair wig.
  1. Though wearing a wig cap beneath is a personal choice; it is recommended to wear a mesh wig cap so that your natural hair can breathe through. A wig cap underneath a synthetic hair wig also makes styling easier since it allows pinning through it for a great fit.
  2. Never scrunch your hair under a synthetic wig. If you have long hair, braid it neatly and wrap it around your scalp; taking care to secure it through bobby pins. Wear a wig cap before putting your synthetic wig on.
  3. Keep your natural hair light during summer so it avoids product buildup. However, moisturizing your hair is recommended. Dry hair creates more friction when rubbed against a wig and so hair loss through breakage could be severe with synthetic hair wig.
  4. Wash your hair more frequently in summer if you wear synthetic wig daily.
  5. Do not wear synthetic wig over damp hair. This serves as the breeding ground for germs and fungus. It also reduces the life of your wig.
  6. A wig and wig cap should be comfortable to wear. The bands, barrettes and other wig pieces that help the wig fit your scalp must not exert too much pressure on your ear, hair line or neck.  Consider checking the size of the wig. Fidgeting with wig causes substantial hair breakage.

Despite following these tips, you must continue to get your hair regularly trimmed. Sometimes wearing heavy cosplay synthetic wigs for longer durations split your ends and cause cuticle damage. To help repair the damage caused by wearing synthetic hair wigs insensibly it is recommended to get hair corrective conditioning treatments. Remember, as long as your natural hair is healthy, synthetic hair wig fits romantically on your scalp!

4 Possible Reasons of Itching with a Wig

Synthetic wigs are good at holding the shape & style than human hair wigs. In summer season, oily scalp & blockage of hair follicles create an annoying itching sensation. There might be several other reasons for an itchy scalp whilst wearing a synthetic hair wig. To avoid itching with synthetic hair wig, find out the factor responsible for the scalp inflammation/ dryness.

1. Dirty Wig

If you have been wearing your synthetic hair wig quite too much, possibly it has turned gritty. The product residues such as mousses, gels & sprays also cause itching & dryness. Wash your wigs after every 20 wears or even more frequently if your scalp is severely oily.

2. Dry Scalp

People having dry hair types usually have scalps producing scaly dandruff. Dandruff creates mess with synthetic hair wigs & creates an intolerable itching feeling. The bumps & scalp sores further make it impossible to bear a wig during summer. To help relief dry scalp, run a cotton swab soaked in witch-hazel since it is known to calm dryness.

3. Blockage of Hair Follicles

Some heavy synthetic wigs block the air flow through the hair follicles- it is thus recommended to wear cotton or mesh liner underneath. This allows the air to pass through the wig to keep the wig light over head. Choose those synthetic hair wigs that allow greater circulation such as wigs with open & lighter caps and those with soft fibers.

4. Protruding Hair Strands

Some protruding stray hair fibers might develop weird tickling. Brush your wigs carefully to keep the strands of the wig protruding through the wig cap to scalp.

It is a good idea to keep your synthetic wigs soft & hydrated using a DIY wig softening conditioner. There are lesser chances of itchy scalp with a wig that is ethereal and soft to wear.

How to Keep your Synthetic Wigs from Getting Frizzy: 5 Steps to Keep Tangles Away from Synthetic Wigs

Synthetic wigs though need relatively less care than human hair wigs; they do become frizzy over the time. Untangling a synthetic wig is often a complete mess. In order to keep it prevented from developing knots & disheveled fibers, synthetic wigs should only be brushed using the specially engineered wig comb. You can add months to the life span of an ordinary synthetic wig by taking measures to keep the frizz away from your synthetic wigs

  1. After taking it out from the packaging, fluff away the loose fibers. Rub your fingers through the wig to take out the loose knots. Then shake it off & comb your wig using a comb having metal bristles. Keep your hand motions swift and short. This reduces the friction & keeps the wig from getting tangled.
  2. Store synthetic wigs on a mannequin head or on a wig stand that should be tall enough to let the wigs hang freely. Wigs also get tangled if there are obstacles in the way where they are stored.
  3. Keep your wigs wrapped by a satin wrapping when not wearing. This prevents lint accumulation over synthetic wigs that make them look dry & frizzy.
  4. Cover your synthetic wigs by a scarf when travelling with a wig on during hot sunny day. Extreme weather conditions such as a windy or a rainy day can tangle the wig.
  5. Moisturize your synthetic wigs regularly with a light sheen. The spritz help coating the wig fibers with a thin layer that does not let the wig fibers get tangled.

Synthetic wigs are not only pocket-friendly but are also time friendly. They keep the memory of the style & wave so you do not need to spend hours in styling it at a late morning to work. However, it is utterly your own duty to maintain the quality of synthetic wigs.

How to Take Odors out of Synthetic Wig: 2 DIY Methods to Get Rid of Rancid Smell off your Synthetic Wigs

Disclaimer: Courtesy Unknown. (The image is not a property of Uniqso)

Factory made & freshly opened synthetic wigs should not contain any smell. Yet, depending upon the supplier synthetic wigs might carry pungent smell of chemicals often time. Synthetic wigs also absorb smells from the environment such as smoke from cooking, fire, tobacco etc. Wearing synthetic wigs over time without taking care to wash it also produces bad sweaty smell that do not dissipate easily. Deposits and oil secreted by scalp glands turn wigs dirty and make them stink. In order to remove the foul-smell out of synthetic wigs, try one of the following DIY methods.

Apple Cider Vinegar Dilution

Since synthetic wigs are finished by alkaline to protect the hair fiber & to keep them heat-resistant, they might generate unpleasant or nasty smells. If the smell does not go even after ordinary washing then it is time to roll the sleeves up for an extra step! Prepare a solution of Apple cider vinegar with water in 4:1 ratio. Mix it well & let your wig soaked in the solution for 20-30 minutes. The vinegar will work out to remove the white film off of your wig. This film is actually the product buildup & chemicals clinging to your synthetic wig. This method is also recommended to people who are allergic to synthetic wigs just because of the chemicals or dyes used in the manufacturing.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is a wonderful agent to deodorize synthetic wigs. It also is considered a good alternative to wig shampoo. To use baking soda, fill your washing sink with ¾ of water & add 1/4th cup of baking soda. Dissolve it completely to prevent chalky residue and soak your synthetic wig for 4 hours. Wash your synthetic wig as you usually do & let it air dry.

After you are done with either of these DIY methods; spray off your synthetic wigs with a DIY wig conditioner. Wig conditioner keeps your wig soft, smooth & style intact. It also adds a natural shine & sweet fragrance to your synthetic wigs that you might have purchased after making heavy savings out of your limited pocket money.
